Glossary of Terms Ch.3


Abandonment –  when an individual feels alone (depression)

Apraxia – a motor planning deficit ( separating movement)

Central Processing – part of the brain that uses perception and cognitive movement (motor planning)

Cognition -  involves all skills that a individual possess (learning)

Development – involves both growth and learning and is very crucial in the assistive technology system

Effectors – describes the part of the brain that makes movements motor output (hand movement

Engram – repeatedly movement or activity ( go over the same thing over and over again)

Growth – changes from birth to adult ( getting older and wiser)

Intrinsic Enablers – simple abilities that we as people do to perform daily activities (listen)

Learning – getting wiser and learning from mistakes; refers to changes that is involved with the environment

Memory – there are different types of memory short (temporary information) and long term(stores information)  and sensory (involves visual)

Morphology – putting small words into order to make large words (add ing to a word)

Motivation – rise to performance ( determination)

Motor control – deals with the brain (movements)

Muscle Tone – stretched brain activity

Optimal Use – use of technology (devices)

Paralysis – no movement at all ( in need of mobility)

Perception – Memorizing data information

Phonology – describe sounds

Pragmatics – understanding language and the person using it ( obtaining and understanding language)

Primitive Reflexes – fast movement learning from birth

Psychosocial Function – identity and motivation (accepting that you have a disability)

Range – a large amount of movement at a time

Recall – a person ability

Recognition- causes a person to identify things

Reluctant Users – no motivation low self esteem

Resolution – describes the smallest separation between two objects

Semantics – putting words and meaning together (gold is color)

Sensors –gathering  information from the environment (reading) 

Spasticity large amounts of muscle tone

Syntax – organizing words in order (communication)

Visual Accommodation – (focusing and able to see) deals with the eyes
